About
Most cinematographers seem to share the same origin story—the camera they received from a parent, etc. And although I, too, received an old Yashica, in my case, it was more about a summer job I got when I was 15 and took too far.
But what do you really need to know about me? That the summer job evolved into a fascination with visual storytelling. That it has been immensely gratifying to explore the world by filming documentaries and then feel inspired by real-world experiences to transform the imaginary worlds of scripted material into cinematic landscapes. That I have shot multiple projects in every genre and learned from each one. That many of these projects participated in major film festivals and won various awards. That I have also received some recognition for my work.
Or do you just need to know that I love my job and I love to work?
I began working in the lighting department at the age of 15 and became a union member before I turned 18. My first opportunities to hold the camera were generously given by more seasoned DPs who believed in me. Along the journey, fellow filmmakers have been my greatest educators - directors, producers, lighting technicians, makeup artists. We meet on sets, evolve together, and carry our newfound knowledge into our next collaboration.
For the last twenty years, I have created images for stories of every kind, with a wide variety of collaborators, in dramatically different circumstances, and in all corners of the globe. I have sunk my teeth into piles of screenplays, finding inspiration in them to manifest through color, light, and camera movement. Some documentaries have taken me to mountain peaks, while others have delved into the depths of human experience. In all of them, I have sought to learn something about the world and to seek compassion through the lens.
The next adventure, the next collaboration, the next story—those are what excite me the most.
